Goshuggist’s (Final) Top 7 Disappointments / Abject Failures Of 2012

By in large, 2012 was an extraordinary year for metal music. Countless bands released either their very best material (Malignancy, Spawn Of Possession, Cattle Decapitation, Hour Of Penance, Gorod, Kraanium, Dehumanized – even if they aren’t tech-death) or their best material in years. (Dying Fetus, Gojira, Meshuggah, Aborted, Putrid Pile – even if Shaun LaCanne doesn’t play tech-death) Of course, every year has their stinkers…

The albums that could have been great, good or even just passable but for one reason or another have ended up either hopelessly generic or down right awful. It’s time to go through the final 7 disappointments and abject failures of 2012. Get your boots on; it’s time to wade straight into the shit. Technical Tuesday – The half-year best of!

I originally had numerous ideas for this week’s column, but while at work (I think about metal a LOT at work) it occurred to me to check which albums I had listened to most in 2012. The list was completely dominated by technical death metal (naturally) as well as the latest Paradise Lost and Cannibal Corpse offerings. Then, I thought to myself, “Man, metalheads LOVE (and HATE) lists! This is a great idea!”

This list is based entirely on number of plays. Hence, an album like Detrimentum’s Inhuman Disgrace, released in January, has a major edge on something like Nile’s At the Gates of Sethu, released months later. Gojira, also a recent release, simply didn’t have enough plays to make the top 15, along with other major players that will most certainly see better representation in a year-end list based on my opinion of the albums. Review: Allegaeon – Formshifter

ALLEGAEON
Formshifter (2012)

United States, Metal Blade Records, Technical Melodic Death Metal

I want to like this album. I really want to like this album. But I want to hate it too. Unfortunately, its just not really working out either way for me, so Formshifter ends up floating someplace inbetween.

I will use the song “Iconic Images” as a model for Formshifter, because I think this song sums up the album quite nicely: Allegaeon has employed a moderate helping of neo-classicism to make songs more interesting and the album more individual; but at the same time, the band has embraced their metalcore side a bit too much, and thereby LOST some individuality, along with some of their more technical death metal moments.
