Witness to the Void’s Top 10 in 2012!

Another great year of metal has come to an end!

My mental dialogue earlier this week:
Me 1: This has been a great year for metal.
Me 2: Yes, yes it has. But wait, you say that every year.
Me 1: True, true. Maybe you are right. Maybe I would just say that every year …
… but wait, at least I’m not saying that this year was a bad year for metal. Now
that would be bad, wouldn’t it?

Perhaps I will always find top-tier releases and memorable surprises in a yearly list of metal, but 2012 had some particularly relevant heavy-hitters. We saw new releases from technical mainstays such as Meshuggah, Hour of Penance, Gorod, Cattle Decapitation, and Dying Fetus, as well as a collaboration on 2012’s Spawn of Possession release so wicked it seemed unreal. As always, 2012 brought us some newcomers to watch in coming years: the galactic destruction of Xenocide; the decadently Necrophagist-esque sophistication of Sophicide; and the usurpers to the throne of Cryptopsy, Desecravity. Oh, and speaking of Cryptopsy, we saw a return to form that will not be forgotten anytime soon. So, without further schizophrenic commentary, here is the top 10 technical death metal releases of 2012, as seen by The Witness to the Void.

Technical Tuesday – Which did not start very technical at all

Today began dreary and overcast, the perfect weather for seriously misanthropic music. Not one to miss out on this, I spun some Anaal Nathrakh and Mistress, who, although not very technical, definitely know how to bring the metal. Anaal Nathrakh play an absolutely virulent blend of black/grind/industrial/death with some falsetto power metal vocals thrown in for good measure, while Mistress (with 4 of 5 members also being in Anaal Nathrakh) deliver some of the most disgusting music I have ever heard. Its sludge/grind for waking up facedown in the gutter. Continue reading Technical Tuesday – Which did not start very technical at all

Technical Tuesday II – The Return

Welcome to the second annual (weekly) Technical Tuesday! In case you missed last week’s program, I will be giving a short description of each complete album I listened to today, and choosing a weekly victor. I was really looking forward to this week for two big releases, or at least what I thought was supposed to be the release date for two big releases: Koloss by Meshuggah and A Perfect Absolution by Gorod. Unfortunately, my usual retailers (iTunes and Amazon) decided not to offer Gorod’s new album for digital purchase, so it looks like I am going to have to wait. Anyway, that doesn’t prevent me from listening to the new Meshuggah… Continue reading Now Playing: The Second Annual Technical Tuesday

Review: Detrimentum – INHUMAN disGRACE

DETRIMENTUM
INHUMAN disGRACE (2012)

England, Deepsend Records, Technical Brutal Death Metal

Like schoolchildren, the metal community loves to bicker over sub-sub genres. Clearly technical brutal death metal differs radically from brutal technical death metal, and therefore deserves as its own separate entity. Thrash/death vs. death/thrash, doom death, death doom, slamming brutal death metal, slam death metal, guttural slamming brutal death metal… Continue reading Review: Detrimentum – INHUMAN disGRACE
